Konami Elebits

Great game for the Wii!

Strengths: Great tutorial included, so it's easy to master.

Weakness: Frame rate suffers when the physics get intense.

Elebits is a worthwhile game for the Wii. It makes good use of the unique controls of the system, which suffer in a lot of other games. The tutorial you can choose to review is an excellent primer to master this game. The opening cutscenes, music and dialog, are atrocious, but once you get past that, you'll find this game to be a gem for the Wii!

Konami's First Nintendo Wii Title

Strengths: Elebits makes great use of the Wii Remote. The WiiConnect24 option enables you to create your own custom Elebits levels and trade them with friends over Nintendo's network.

Weakness: I have not found any Weaknesses.

Elebits is an excellent and much-overlooked game for the Nintendo Wii console. Unlike most of the other games that came out in the first few months for the Wii, this one was built from the ground up with the Wii in mind. As a result, it controls perfectly on the system. You play a young boy who must collect Elebits, which are the source of electricity. To do this you use a gun, controlled by aiming the Wii remote at the screen in the most intuitive way possible. The game is played in the first person perspective and you move around the levels by using the Nunchuk attachment. Move the Wii remote to the edge of the screen and your view turns. The system works perfectly and is a model for how future FPS games should work.

At first you start out in the child's bedroom and you have a fairly low power gun. With this you can zap any Elebits you see, and as you zap more your power increases. With increased power you can lift larger items (often finding Elebits under or inside them). You can also turn on various electrical appliances once you reach their wattage thresholds, with Elebits usually tumbling out of them as a result. In this sense of starting in a small area with limited abilities and advancing to larger and larger areas and dealing with bigger objects, the game plays very much like Katamari Damacy, though with a very different control scheme of course.

Eventually you are out in the town tossing cars and buildings around to find Elebits, which can be a very satisfying experience. The main flaw in the game is exposed in some of these outdoor levels as the sheer number of objects flying around (once you start throwing several up in the air) is too much for the game's engine to handle and the framerate suffers as a result. Hopefully there is room for improvement here and this can be fixed for any sequel. If it weren't for this flaw I would have rated the game 5 stars, easily.

The main game takes a good 15-20 hours to get through. Most of the levels involve collecting Elebits, though there are a few boss fights as well. To mix up the gameplay, there are certain levels where you must not make too much noise (by breaking items) or where the gravity is turned off (and all the objects float around in the air - very fun!). Beyond the main game, there are many unlockables and it will take considerably longer than 20 hours to achieve 100% of everything the game has to offer. You get a score for each level (with the 'S' rank being the ultimate goal). You can also unlock special challenge missions which usually have to trying to collect a certain number of Elebits with a strict time limit. There are also hidden powerups that can be found and unlocked permanently in the game.

Beyond that, there is multiplayer play where one person controls the movement and up to 4 others can zap Elebits with their own remotes. One excellent and unexpected feature of the game is the ability to create your own levels by placing objects you have unlocked into the various levels (which you also unlock throughout the game). These levels can even be shared over the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection with people on your Wii friends list. This is the first (and to date still the only) game to feature any kind of Internet capability.

To summarize, I consider this game a must buy on the level of Zelda Twilight Princess. Though it lacks that game's overall polish, it is notable for the fact that it was designed from the start as a Wii game, and it contains exactly the type of innovation and creativity we want to see more of on the system.

The controls such as pulling and turning the doors open were a bit tricky to me, sometimes it didnt recognize my action. Other then that, the aiming controls were spot on. I thought the story was pretty lame, tends to aim to children.

Multiplayer is fun for a while, but I wish it had more modes. The ability to build your own course helps add replayability. Hoping for a sequel with bigger environments and different objects! Pick up this title.

Wacky Concept. Underrated Game
