Violent, gore filled, strategic, and visually top-notch. You will stay up long hours with this one. I'm new to console games (X-Box and PC game junkie), but if developers keep producing this high level of FPS/RPG for us couch 'taters, I'll be a happy camper (no pun intended) indeed. The Thing

Strengths: scary atmosphere

Weakness: micro-management of your allies is a pain

The Thing is a third person shooter for the X box and is similar to Max Payne and resident evil. The game continues where the movie left off, and you are Blake, an Army officer sent to investigate the destroyed Arctic base. Accompanying you are a few soldiers, a medic, an engineer, and a gunner. The game continues where the movie left off, and you are Blake, an Army officer sent to investigate the destroyed Arctic base. Accompanying you are a few soldiers, a medic, an engineer, and a gunner. This game has great graphics and does a good job of setting up a scary and foreboding atmosphere. Oupost 31 and the Swedish base look just like the movie counterparts. You will shiver yourself when your character runs out into the frigid, blowing snow and you hear the fierce winds whooshing past your character. What makes the game scary is that you do not know which one of your teammates will be infected and transformed into the next mutated thing. Also, remember that your teammates are just as scared and nervous as you are and will gradually begin to freak out when they see the gruesome remnants of the previous team before them, scattered throughout the ruined base. So you have to do some micromanaging of your teammates because the game utilizes a fear/ trust system. The more scared your teammates are, the more they begin to suspect you of being the thing and if they are not properly placated, they will either turn on you and try to kill you or will turn their gun on themselves. Unfortunately, if you're looking for a straight and simple shooter like Max Payne, this game doesn't fully lived up to that expectation because , instead of focusing on simply blowing away the alien enemies, you also have to worry about your own teammates, kind of like an irritating escort mission. I was sometimes tempted to simply leave them behind and just tackled the enemy by myself, but the game won't let you do so. Also, it is sometimes hard to aim your weapon in the first person perspective, because the cursor moves too slow while your small alien enemies rapidly crawls and then jumps at you. Overall, this game is pretty decent and if you like your games suspenseful and scary, then you will enjoy this game also.

A good horror adventure

Strengths: Good game at a great price.

Weakness: Friendly AI isn't always up to par.

This game, based loosely on the classic movie about a killer carrot beast, has you leading a squad of people trying to survive against The Thing. It screams online multiplayer, but such is not to be found here; instead, you've got friends controlled by AI. It's servicable, but wouldn't it be more fun if they were your friends?

This game is relatively good *IF*...

Strengths: Good story line

Weakness: Bad graphics for an XBox game

This game is relatively good *IF* you can get into it. It's a horror type game, and for its time it is pretty good. Remember, it is 2 - 3 years old. The problem is a lot of people just can't or won't get into it, and immediately say it sucks and put it down. This game doesn't suck, it's nothing spectacular, but it surely doesn't suck.

The game has many elements taken from the movie. Your squad members sometimes get shaky and you have to calm them down through the means of giving them weapons or possibly taking a blood test to prove that you are not infected. Just like in the movie it is hard to guess who is infected and who is not. Occasionally a member of your group will "Thing-out"; sometimes this is scripted and other times it is because they have been attacked too much. The only flaw that I have found is the fact that once you're done with the game, there is really no reason to play it again. Survival horror fans should definitely give this one a try.
